Interior Designer in Markham
Markham holds two kinds of house side by side. Unionville and the older core have period properties on established streets. Cornell, Angus Glen, Cathedraltown and Berczy are recent, large, and built to a specification the buyer was expected to personalise. Interior design in Markham means knowing which problem you are solving.
Designing for more than one generation
A brief we meet more often in Markham than anywhere else in the GTA is the household containing three generations. That changes the plan rather than the finishes: a ground-floor bedroom and full bathroom, a second kitchen or a kitchen planned for heavier daily cooking, separated living zones so different routines do not collide, and circulation that works for someone who will not always manage stairs.
It is a design problem, not an add-on, and it rewards being planned properly — routes that are short and level, working heights set to the people who use them, light and privacy where each generation needs them. Much of it overlaps with designing a home to age in place, and we bring the same thinking.
New-build personalisation
Where a home is recently built or still in construction, the highest-value moment has usually not passed. Layout, lighting and joinery can still be shaped; finishes can be chosen as a whole rather than from the builder’s range. The earlier we are involved, the more of the house is still open.
Unionville
The older houses on Main Street Unionville and the streets around it carry period character and, in places, heritage designation. The work is closer to our approach in Rosedale — restraint, proportion and detail — than to the subdivisions a few minutes away.
How we work in Markham
We start with the household rather than the house: who lives there, who visits and stays, who cooks and how, who needs quiet and who needs company, and how each person moves through a day. In a multigenerational home that conversation decides the plan — which rooms sit on the ground floor, whether there are two kitchens or one built for heavier use, how the living spaces are separated and connected, and where the privacy is. Only then do we work on light, joinery and palette.
In a new build we prefer to be involved before the builder’s selection deadlines, when the plan and the lighting can still change; in an older Unionville house the method is closer to our period work in central Toronto — restraint, proportion and detail.
